CABLES Cables DO make a difference. The amount of difference depends on the specific cable and the type of music/tone you are playing. The cable will have less effect on the tone of a highly distorted signal than on a clean or overdriven tone. If you don't believe cables make a difference, tone test all of the different cables you have. Borrow some & compare those also.
