Tubes

TUBES are the Heart of Classic Rock Guitar TONE!
Especially overdriven tubes.
IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE TO ACHIEVE CLASSIC ROCK TONE, OVERDRIVE THE POWER TUBES!!
Most Classic Rock Guitarists feel you must overdrive the "Power" tubes (aka the Output Tubes) for the correct Classic Rock Tone.  Merely overdriving the preamp tubes just doesn't do it.  The tone is too fizzy.

Believe it or not, you can usually get a better Overdriven Classic Rock tone using a quality overdrive "stompbox" (pedal), than can be had overdriving only the preamp tubes.  Overdriven preamp tubes is sooooo 80s.

"But it's Too Loud! when I turn up enough to overdrive the power tubes!"
Try an attenuator such as THD's Hot Plate.
Also try "Yellow Jackets" (& similar products).  They are useful to lower volume of many amps.  They are basically an adapter that replaces your 6L6 or EL34 type tubes.  It installs an el84 in most amps & does not require re-biasing.  This will lower the volume a little & give an overdriven tone sooner.

Here are three very useful links for tube users;
